WTO embodies a new institutional framework to discipline the international trade with fairness and transparent policy making. This book highlights the deficiencies and imbalances in the WTO agreements. It revisits the constitutional structure of WTO and the different bodies involved in the day to day operation. However, slashing of agriculture subsidies being offered by the developed countries to their farmers remained the most contentious issue. The high level of agriculture protectionism maintained by the EU and subsidies by industrialized nations cost the developing countries, a loss of $72 billion annually. This book examines how the media has reported negotiating positions of different nations. How has the Global media come in the way of the WTO negotiations on subsidies in agriculture? Whether there exists any inherent contradiction regarding global media projections of free trade and protectionism vis-a-vis agriculture? The chapter on The Politics of Agriculture Negotiations takes a deeper look at the aspiration of developing and developed countries and how these countries have fared during the WTO period. It tends to discuss the political theories widely used to explain the agricultural negotiations.
The book looks at the different texts formulated during the various rounds of negotiation in agriculture and tries to inter-relate the political framework and the inadequacies in the elimination of domestic support and distortion in international trade while discussing the future of the agricultural subsidies.
