The Rani of Kittur is a historical-political play, which depicts the patriotic and heroic life of Rani Chennamma of Kittur kingdom in South India and her encounter with the rulers of the East India Company in 1824. She is the earliest Rani, who rebelled and fought against the British rule thirty-three years before Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi kingdom came on the scene.
The Rani of Kittur highlights the theme of honour and glory; patriotism and freedom; loyalty and sacrifice and betrayal and treachery so commonly found in Indian history. The female heroism shown by Rani Chennamma resembles the heroism of other women of the world like Joan of Arc, Margaret Thatcher and Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
