This is the last book Indira Goswami wrote before her untimely death in 2011, and is published here for the first time in translation.

Set in late 19th century Assam, this biographical novel is about a Bodo freedom fighter, who was arguably the first woman to be promoted to the post of revenue collector('tehsildar') in British India.

Along with this story, the book contains probably the first novel to depict the plight of Hindu widows in the holy city of Vrindavan, The Blue-necked Braja.

The two together make a fitting tribute to one of India's most celebrated writers, and a marvellous introduction to her work.

Author Bio: Indira Goswami has been honored with many awards including the country's highest literary price, the Jnanpith award. Words from the Mist directed by Jahnu Barua is one of the many biographical films made on her eventful life. In 2008, she became India's first Principal Prince Claus Laureate for her contribution to literature, culture and social change.

Aruni Kashyap is the author of The House with a Thousand Novels (Penguin, 2012). He lives in Guwahati.

Gayatri Bhattacharyya is a former lecturer in English at the University of Guwahati.

Review: "...a woman of remarkable courage and conviction... Indira Goswami has also been an important voice in championing women's causes, and has done much to highlight the plight of widows... [She] is one of those rare figures whose achievements as a writer are closely paralleled by their accomplishments as a social and political activist."
