60 b/w photos, 27 figs., Bibliography, Index. The Satavahanas (Ca. 2nd cent. BC- 2nd cent. AD) were one ofthe empire builders in ancient India. Their rule extended almost over the entireregion south of the Vindhyas and their reigns is marked by considerable peaceand prosperity which was due to the flourishing trade with the Roman empire. Theartistic creations of the Satavahan era are among the grandest in India, comparable in their monumental quality to such imposing buildings as theKhajuraho and Chola temples. They are unsurpassed in early India and many ofthem are still standing in their pristine glory. Yet Satvahana art is nottreated as an independent school. Satavahana Art is aimed at delineating thecharacteristic features more particularly of its regional varieties such asWestern India, Central India and the Southern Deccan. The Satvahana art includessuch imposing edifices as the early Buddhist rock-cut caves of Western India, the Gateway at Sanchi and the sculpture of the Mahasutra at Amaravati, the magnificentpaintings in the Hinayana group at Ajanta, besides beautiful terracottas, bronzes and ivories. They constitute a link between the Maurya-Sunga art of theearlier period and the later that of the Golden Age of the Guptas.
