If one surveys the post 1980s Indian English poetry, the name that emerges more strikingly from a legion of names is that of R. K. Singh. His thirteen volumes of poems, excluding thirteen e-collections, recount that quality of consistency and continuity in writing which is rather missing in many of the contemporary poets.

Ram Krishna Singh, like most of his contemporaries, writes on a variety of issues. For instance, woman, politics, corruption, loneliness, alienation, nature and existential concerns form a bulk of his poetry, but what sets him apart from others is the overtures of love and sex, and the importunities of erotic explorations: His verses are striking in that he sounds both carnally and spiritually minded even as he does not appear reticent in communicating the truth.

The array of words in his poetry also calls for a considerable attention from the readers. He is essentially brief and lyrical and an established name in world haiku and tanka.

R. K. Singh s Mind and Art: A Symphony of Expressions, a collection of twenty one critical essays, is a textual elucidation of R.K. Singh s poetry. It is expected that the articles will facilitate the scholars of Indian English poetry to the understanding of the poet s work and stimulate the poetry lovers interest in one of India s leading poets.

Author Bio: Rajni Singh, born, brought up and educated in Varanasi, did her M.A. (English) from Banaras Hindu University in 1997 and Ph.D. on Tennyson and T.S. Eliot: A Comparative Study, which was published in 2005. She has been interested in Indian English Writing and has published several research papers on recent authors, both poets and fictioneers, in Indian and foreign journals. Her articles on the haiku of R.K. Singh have been widely referred to the world over.

She has also been active in the areas of English language teaching and has diversified to English for Science and Technology and other professional communication skills development of technical students at tertiary level.

Dr Rajni Singh is now Associate Professor of English in the Dept of Humanities & Social Sciences, Indian School of Mines.
