Ramu, a boy of the streets of Delhi, encounters a young American, Kurt Anderson, and introduces him to an Anglo-Indian lady, Anita Harwood, with whom Kurt falls in love. But, unknown to her, he is bound by a commitment to a young woman on the other side of the world. Before Kurt can deal with this crisis, he must deal with matters of violence that shatter his life and the life of his new-found love. But there are others with whom the young American must deal: a banker who commits rape, a police chief who expels Kurt from India, a Bangalore family in the photo business and Juanita's upstairs neighbor who barely manages to tolerate little Ramu.
