The overreaching impact of developmental interventions on gender and society in colonial and post colonial India has not recieved the attention that it deserves from social scientists. This book is a modest attempt to fill this gap. Of the 18 wide ranging esays included in this volume, some seek to explore complex issues that confrinted colonial India such as the reconstitution of patriarchy in Punjab and United Provinces, women`s mental health, establishments of medical colleges and hospitals for women in Ludhiana, Vellore and Delhi and the labour force in the presidencies of Bengal and Madras. The richness of this collection is enhaanced by the diversity of disciplines of the contributors. About Author : Shakti Kak teaches Economics at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. Her research concerns include gender, labour, employment and poverty. Biswamoy Pati teaches History at Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi. He has worked on the social history of colonial and post colonial orissa.
