Dalits or the downtrodden have been referred to in history, as people, without history of their own, which certainly is untrue and illogical, notwithstanding the fact that they have been a marginalized lot in their own land, and treated as mere objects. Even scholars and academics have treated them as subjects for their research in social sciences, anthropology and philanthropy. Hence there are a very few objective studies or works of worth in this discipline. India, which is propagating itself to be a true democracy with rich civil rights, is ignoring that its 160 million Dalits or untouchables still suffer from deplorable caste discrimination and are deprived of even basic rights such as right to life and security. In addition to being target of physical and sexual violence, Dalits are often required to eat and drink from separate religious services, walk miles to get water and work in degrading conditions. India is truly a flawed democracy as it failed to implement the laws, which provide protection against such caste discrimination. This book on dalits goes back into past and looks at the history of dali alienation, fear and discrimination. Issues like racial conflict, racism and justice, relevance of human rights to dalits, caste and color prejudices etc find description in the book.
