The year 2011 marks a milestone in the history of Delhi. As the capital of modern India, Delhi has completed its centenary in the year 2011. On December 12, 1911, it was decided to shift the capital of colonial India from Calcutta to Delhi, establishing the city as the political pivot of the British Empire in the country. The most ancient description for Delhi being the capital city is found in the epic Mahabharata when it was founded by the Pandavas as Indraprastha. The historical evidence reveals that between 12th and 19th centuries AD, Delhi served as the capital for many rulers. The original seven cities that came together to form what we know as Delhi today were Qila Rai Pithora, Siri, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, Ferozabad, Dinpanah and Shahjahanabad. The eighth city, the 'New' Delhi that never really got another name, was built by the British. Modern Delhi is perhaps the best example of the variety and diversity of India, serving as home to people of different religions, regions and ethnic groups who migrate here in search of livelihood. The last 100 years have seen Delhi grow and change. The Commonwealth Games 2010 gave the city a rapid makeover, earning it high accolades. This book presents a pictorial history of Delhi and throws light on the ups and downs the city has witnessed during the last 100 years. A glimpse of its history has been illustrated in the chapter 'History of Delhi'. Other chapters highlight the present administrative structure, law and order machinery, health, education, art and culture, places of historical importance, sports, fairs and festivals and the post-Independence infrastructure. The book is essential reading for the tourist, planner, administrator, scholar, and the general reader who is interested in the history and culture of Delhi, its development, and anything to know about it.

This book was added to South Asia bookstore on Thursday 28 June, 2012.
