The recent economic rise of China and India has attracted a great deal of attention. Yet, many of the views regarding this phenomenon have been tendentious, exaggerated, or oversimplified. Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay scrutinizes and demolishes the myths that have accumulated around the economic achievements of these two giants in the last quarter century. While Bardhan examines and compares major policy changes, political and economic structures, and current general performance, he points to accountability failures as marring the development process in both countries.

In a new afterword, the author reflects on the recent economic and socio-political concerns of the two economies and on the nature of capitalism in both countries.

Author Bio: Pranab Bardhan is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

Review 1: Invalid input characters filtered from this field Of the several books making general comparisons of the recent growth experiences of China and India, this one is the best I have read. It is full of useful data, it is a great source of information, and it contains insights that will be interesting to general readers.

Review 2: While many books address Western fears about China either soothing or stroking them ... Awakening Giants offers a fine-grained and nuanced view of Chinese economy and society in terms of its own internal logic ...

Review 3: Invalid input characters filtered from this field In his latest book on Chindia, [Bardhan] interestingly attempts liberating a rather dry economic subject by blending it with the realms of his long-standing interest, literature.
