This book seeks to explian the changes in agriculture, peasantry, rural farm villages and the food security issues in Japan, linking these with the development of the capitalist economy during the 150 years period from 1850 to 2000. Around 1850, Japan embarked on the march to 'Modernization' which would propel its capaitalist economy linking it to the world marekts. 2000 represents the time when Japan had already achieved a high level of industrial development reaching the level of an 'Economic Superpower'.

The entire period can be divided into two sub-periods. The first one called the 'Pre-war Period', is from the time Japan began to modernize till its defeat in the Pacific War in 1945. Japan which was an agricultural nation became militaristic and aggressive under the influence of the Emperor System and made rapid industrial and economic progress.



Author Bio: Shuzo Teruoka, born in 1924, has taught at the Tokyo University of Education (now Tsukuba University), Shinshu University, Utsunomiya University and the University of East Asia. His main area of research is Japanese argricultural problems and policies under Japanese capitalist economy, both past and present. His major works include, Nihon Noghyo Mondai no Tenkai (The Development of Agricultural Problems in Japan) 2 Vols, University of Tokyo Press 1970, 1985. He has also edited Nihon Nohgyo 150 Nen: 1850-2000 (Japanese Agriculture 150 Years: 1850-2000) Yuhikaku, 2003. He is an Honorary Member of the Agricultural Economics Society of Japan and its former Vice-president. He is also an Honorary Member of the Institute of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Japan and its former Chairperson. Sarah Ham Akamine, the translator, graduated from Washington University in St. Louis. She now lives in Ireland, where she works as a Japanese-English translator.
